The Institute of Railway Research (IRR) at The University of Huddersfield is a world-leading centre in the field of railway engineering. The IRR carries out research and consultancy in the areas of: Vehicle & Track Dynamics, Data Science, Traction & Braking, Smart Maintenance, and Pantograph-Overhead line interaction.

The Smart Rolling Stock Maintenance Research Facility (SRSMRF) at the IRR complements the facilities and work programme of the UKRRIN Centre of Excellence in Rolling Stock. The SRSMRF aims to improve the efficiency of rolling stock maintenance through use of robotics, advanced RCM and prognostics, and depot work flow optimisation.
